There are always hazards when it comes to collecting old things but they're not always as bad as you might think. Vaseline, or Uranium glass is a type of glassware that came into being in the mid 1800s and continued to be made into and through the new century. It is typically seen in green and into yellow shades (thus the Vaseline nickname) but some color variation exists. The best guarantee of a piece being Uranium glass is to put it under a blacklight. The UV light will cause the Uranium Dioxide atoms in the glass to glow and the glass will luminesce brightly. Before you start worrying: no, the uranium content in the glass is not dangerous. It does have some radioactivity but the amount is negligible. We are exposed to considerably more radiation from other things in our everyday environment than the glass could even come close to. So, if you want to start collecting, go forth without fear! We get some pieces of Vaseline glass in here every now and then and we even keep them under a blacklight so you can check out their alien glow!
